Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

What is the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning?

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is research - often done in partnership with students - that examines teaching practices that affect student learning. This includes classroom implementation, technological enhancements to teaching, and all aspects of student learning and engagement in higher education.

SoTL research is conducted by members of educational communities (faculty, staff, students). Scholars frequently study their own classrooms or  teaching, as well as their teaching techniques for insights into the efficacy of approaches, the impact of emerging technologies on student learning, and more. Scholarship is shared broadly to contribute to the knowledge and practice of post-secondary teaching and learning.

Centre for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Launched in 2024, the new Centre for SoTL aims to support faculty from across the college in understanding what SoTL is, what resources are available, and what opportunities exist to engage in this exciting area of research.

In a recent post on the Teaching & Learning website, experienced SoTL scholar Launa Gauthier discusses navigating the dual role of teacher and researcher in SoTL work.
