Getting Started

head with question mark

Step 1: Understanding the Assignment

Before you start any assignment, you need to know what your instructor is asking for. Always talk to your instructor if you don’t understand the instructions.

  • To help you understand what your assignment means, learn about specific task words that are typical in college assignments and what you should do for each part.

If you’re still struggling with how to start an assignment, visit the Learning Commons at Doon in 2A103 or online in the Virtual Learning Commons (VLC).

  • Make an appointment with the Writing Service to help you get started.
  • Book an appointment with Study Skills to develop a plan for working on the assignment.

Step 2: Choosing a Topic

A big part of any assignment is coming up with a question that helps you focus on your topic. Working on your assignment will be easier and quicker when you are focused on a specific topic or question.
